Turkmenistan emerged as an independent state in 1991

 

Our country is rather big. It stretches for 1100 km from west to east- from the Caspian sea to the Amu Darya river, and for 650 km from north to south. The major part of the country is occupied by the Kara Kum desert( 350.000 sq km).20 per cent of its territory are the mountains and 1 per cent are the oases. The Kopet- Dag range is in the south of Turkmenistan, while the Turkmen Balkan mountains are in the west and the Kugitang Range is in the east. The climate is sharply continental with little rainfall during summer. Summer is dry. Precipitation is low- about 240 mm a year. It is four times less than in Moscow. Turkmenistan is often called the country of eternal sunshine. Turkmenistan is rich in mineral resources. It possesses the world’s fourth- largest reserves of natural gas and substantial oil resources.

 

National symbols

 

The symbols of Turkmenistan are the state emblem of Turkmenistan, the national flag of Turkmenistan.

 

 

 

 Administrative-territorial system

 

The administrative-territorial system of Turkmenistan is represented by five regions (velayats) – Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, Lebap and Mary, each of which in its turn is divided into districts. There are 50 districts, 16 cities, 9 towns in districts, 77 settlements, 565 rural municipal formations and 1937 villages. All cities, with the exception of capital of Turkmenistan – Ashgabat, are subordinated to regions in the territory of which they are located.

 

  

Custom and foreign exchange regulations in Turkmenistan

 

In Turkmenistan foreign nationals do not require any documentary authorization to import and export foreign currency. The import or export amount of foreign currency should be declared in words by filling in custom’s declaration. Turkmenistan currency remained on departure could be exchanged for foreign currency at the currency exchange bureau.

 

Currency

 

Currency is the Turkmen manat. One manat is divided into100 tenge. Notes come in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 denominations, coins in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50.
